Created in Northampton Region, Pennsylvania on 18 November 1834, Edwin Gilbert was a son of Julia (Troxell) Gilbert (1807-1876) and William H. Gilbert (1805-1862), a New Jersey native who operated a mill and gathered tolls at Biery's Link after transferring to Pennsylvania.

In 1850, he existed in Lehigh Township, Northampton State, Pennsylvania along with his parents and young cousin, Helena (born sometime about 1833). There, he served to aid his family on a laborer's wages.

Before the decade was out, Edwin Gilbert had wed Ellen Caroline Tombler (1831-1914). A native of Catasauqua in Lehigh State, Pennsylvania, she was a child of Daniel Tombler (1796-1841) and Catharine (Hartzell) Tombler (1797-1852).

On 31 January 1856, Edwin and Ellen welcomed girl Rebecca Gilbert (1856-1914) to the world. (Rebecca proceeded to wed Nathan Bartholomew in 1881.)

Daughter Brian Bill Gilbert (1857-1916) used on 28 September 1857, and still another child, Alice C. Gilbert (1859-1932) arrived on 25 September 1859. (David proceeded to wed Annie Frey in 1880. Alice committed Sylvester Minich.)

Chief Gilbert's namesake, daughter Edwin, was created sometime about 1861, later wed Lillian, and passed on at the Episcopal Hospital in Philadelphia in 1942.

Civil War Military Company

Edwin Gilbert enrolled for military service at age 27 on 21 June 1861 at Catasauqua, Lehigh State and mustered in at Camp Curtin in Harrisburg, Dauphin Region, Pennsylvania on 30 September as a Corporal with Company F, 47th Program, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. Military files at the time identified him as a carpenter who had been 5'6" tall with brown hair, light eyes and a gentle complexion.

As the appointments of his early offers up through the rates from Corporal to 1st Sergeant remain unclear, what's specific is that Edwin Gilbert re-enlisted for an additional three-year expression of company on 19 October 1863 while stationed with his organization at Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas, Florida. Following distinguishing himself in combat, he was then advertised from the rank of 1st Sergeant to Captain on 1 January 1865.

The 1890 U.S. Veterans'Schedule noted he suffered sunstroke at some point while offering with the 47th Pennsylvania Volunteers, and that it was a critical enough show that he was however classified as a veteran with a handicap nearly three years later.
